When we think of killers in the 2000s, some of the more well-known cases that come to mind include the likes of Casey Anthony, Jodi Arias, and Scott Peterson. But there were also many lesser-known killers who committed gruesome crimes during this decade. In this article, we’ll take a look at some of these cases and the individuals behind them.

  1. Richard Alden Samuel McCroskey III (Virginia, 2009) Richard McCroskey was a 20-year-old aspiring rapper from California who traveled to Virginia in August 2009 to perform at a music festival. While there, he brutally murdered his girlfriend, her parents, and her friend with a mallet and a knife. The killings were so violent that the mallet broke during the attack. McCroskey was eventually caught and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
  2. Dena Schlosser (Texas, 2004) In November 2004, Dena Schlosser, a 35-year-old mother of three, cut off her 10-month-old daughter’s arms with a kitchen knife. Schlosser was reportedly suffering from postpartum depression and had become obsessed with religion. She believed that by killing her daughter, she was doing God’s will. Schlosser was found not guilty by reason of insanity and was committed to a psychiatric hospital.
  3. Ronald Gene Simmons (Arkansas, 1987) While Ronald Gene Simmons’ crimes occurred in 1987, his trial and subsequent execution took place in the 2000s. Simmons murdered 14 members of his family, including his wife, children, and grandchildren, over a period of several days in December 1987. He then killed two strangers who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Simmons was sentenced to death and was executed by lethal injection in 2004.
  4. Steven Spader (New Hampshire, 2009) In October 2009, Steven Spader, then 17 years old, broke into a New Hampshire home with three accomplices. Once inside, they attacked a mother and her daughter with machetes. The daughter, who was 11 years old, was killed in the attack. Spader was eventually caught and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
  5. Marcus Wesson (California, 2004) Marcus Wesson was the leader of a cult-like family in California. In March 2004, Wesson killed nine of his children, aged between 1 and 25, and his 25-year-old daughter-in-law. He then attempted to kill himself but was unsuccessful. Wesson was sentenced to death in 2005.
