Utah may be known for its beautiful national parks and ski resorts, but it’s also been home to some of the most shocking true crime cases in recent years. From gruesome murders to high-profile kidnappings, these cases have captured the attention of the nation. Here are five of the most high-profile true crime cases in Utah.
- Elizabeth Smart Kidnapping
In 2002, 14-year-old Elizabeth Smart was abducted from her home in Salt Lake City by Brian David Mitchell and his wife, Wanda Barzee. Smart was held captive for nine months and subjected to sexual assault and abuse. She was eventually rescued after a biker recognized Mitchell and Barzee from a police sketch. Mitchell was sentenced to life in prison, while Barzee was sentenced to 15 years.
- The Hi-Fi Murders
In 1974, five people were brutally murdered during a robbery at the Hi-Fi Shop in Ogden. The perpetrators, Dale Pierre and William Andrews, tortured and killed the victims before setting the store on fire. Pierre and Andrews were eventually captured and sentenced to death, but their sentences were later commuted to life in prison.
- Susan Powell Disappearance
In 2009, Susan Powell disappeared from her home in West Valley City. Her husband, Josh Powell, was named a person of interest in the case, but was never charged. Powell later killed himself and his two young sons in an explosive fire at his home in Washington state. Powell’s father, Steven Powell, was later convicted of voyeurism and sentenced to 30 months in prison.
- Utah Highway Murders
In 1991, six women were murdered along the highways of Utah. The killer, Keith Jesperson, was a truck driver who would pick up prostitutes and kill them. Jesperson was eventually caught and sentenced to life in prison.
- Ted Bundy Murders
Although Ted Bundy is often associated with Washington and Florida, he also committed a series of murders in Utah. In 1974, Bundy abducted and killed two young women from a park in Salt Lake City. He later confessed to killing at least 30 women across several states and was executed in Florida in 1989.
These five high-profile true crime cases in Utah shocked the nation and continue to be remembered to this day. While justice was served in some of these cases, others remain unsolved or shrouded in mystery.
