Rhode Island may be the smallest state in the United States, but it’s certainly not short on shocking true crime cases. From murders to white-collar crimes, there have been some jaw-dropping cases that have captured the attention of the nation. Here are five of the most high-profile true crime cases in Rhode Island that you won’t believe.
- The Station Nightclub Fire
On February 20, 2003, a fire broke out at The Station nightclub in West Warwick during a Great White concert, killing 100 people and injuring over 200 others. The cause of the fire was later determined to be from pyrotechnics used during the band’s performance. The incident became one of the deadliest nightclub fires in U.S. history.
- Craig Price
Dubbed as the “Warwick Slasher,” Craig Price gained national attention after he murdered four people in Warwick, Rhode Island between 1987 and 1989, when he was just a teenager. He was convicted of the murders and sentenced to life in prison without parole. He is currently one of the youngest inmates serving a life sentence in the U.S.
- Martha Moxley
In 1975, 15-year-old Martha Moxley was bludgeoned to death with a golf club in her family’s backyard in Greenwich, Connecticut. Her neighbor, Michael Skakel, was eventually convicted of the murder in 2002, but not before moving to Rhode Island and changing his name. The case gained national attention due to Skakel’s ties to the Kennedy family.
- Jason Bass
Jason Bass was convicted of the murder of 19-year-old Stephanie Moulton, whose body was found in a park in Woonsocket in 2003. Bass had previously been released from prison after serving time for kidnapping and raping a woman. The case sparked controversy over the state’s parole system and whether Bass should have been released.
- Gordon Fox
Gordon Fox, a former Rhode Island House Speaker, was sentenced to three years in prison in 2015 for bribery and wire fraud. The case centered around a scheme in which Fox accepted bribes in exchange for promoting certain legislation. His conviction was seen as a major blow to Rhode Island’s already-tarnished political reputation.
These five true crime cases in Rhode Island show that even the smallest of states can have some of the most shocking and complex cases. From tragic accidents to heinous crimes, Rhode Island has seen it all.
