Hamantaschen are a traditional Jewish cookie that are enjoyed during the festival of Purim. They’re named after the villain of the story of Purim, Haman, and their triangular shape is said to represent his hat or pockets. These cookies are buttery, crumbly, and filled with your favorite fruit jam. They’re a delicious treat that’s perfect for sharing with family and friends during this festive time.
Here’s what you’ll need:
Ingredients:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2 large eggs
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- Fruit jam (any flavor you like)
Instructions:
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
- Add the softened butter and mix using a pastry blender or your hands until the mixture is crumbly.
- Add in the eggs and vanilla extract and mix until the dough comes together.
- Divide the dough into two parts and wrap each in plastic wrap. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- On a floured surface, roll out the dough to about 1/4 inch thickness. Use a round cookie cutter or the rim of a drinking glass to cut out circles of dough.
- Spoon a small amount of fruit jam into the center of each circle.
- To shape the hamantaschen, fold the sides of the circle up to form a triangle, leaving a small amount of the filling visible in the center.
- Pinch the corners of the triangle to seal the edges of the cookie together.
- Place the cookies on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 12-15 minutes or until the edges are lightly golden.
- Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
Enjoy your delicious Hamantaschen cookies as a sweet treat for Purim!
