How to Make Flavorful Ham Broth: A Simple Recipe for Soups and Stews
Making ham broth is an excellent way to use up a leftover ham bone and create a flavorful base for soups, stews, and other dishes. Here’s a simple recipe for making ham broth:
Ingredients:
- 1 ham bone (with some meat still attached)
- 1 onion, roughly chopped
- 2 celery stalks, roughly chopped
- 2 carrots, roughly chopped
- 4 cloves of garlic, smashed
- 2 bay leaves
- 8 cups of water
Instructions:
- Add the ham bone to a large pot and cover it with 8 cups of water.
- Add the chopped onion, celery, carrots, garlic, and bay leaves to the pot.
- Bring the water to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and let the broth simmer for at least 2 hours (or up to 4 hours) until the broth has reduced and the flavors have melded together.
- Remove the ham bone and vegetables from the pot with a slotted spoon or strainer.
- Strain the broth through a fine-mesh strainer or cheesecloth to remove any remaining solids.
- Allow the broth to cool, then store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week, or freeze it for longer storage.
Use your homemade ham broth as a base for soups, stews, and sauces, or enjoy it on its own as a comforting and flavorful broth.
