In 1983, Diane Downs shot her three children in the back of her car and then claimed that a stranger had attacked them. One child died, and the other two were left with permanent injuries. Downs was eventually convicted of murder and attempted murder and was sentenced to life in prison. She maintains her innocence to this day.

4. The Wah Mee Massacre

In 1983, 13 people were shot and killed at the Wah Mee gambling club in Seattle’s Chinatown. Three men were convicted of the murders and sentenced to life in prison without parole. The case shocked the city and remains one of the deadliest mass shootings in Washington state history.

5. Amanda Knox

In 2007, Amanda Knox, an American student studying abroad in Italy, was accused of murdering her roommate. Knox was eventually convicted, but the conviction was overturned on appeal in 2011, and she was released from prison.
