Colorado may be known for its stunning mountain views and outdoor adventures, but it’s also been the setting for some of the most infamous true crime cases in American history. From unsolved mysteries to gruesome murders, here are five of the most high-profile true crime cases that shook the Centennial State.
- The JonBenét Ramsey Case: In 1996, six-year-old JonBenét Ramsey was found dead in her family’s Boulder, Colorado, home. The case became a media sensation and has remained unsolved to this day, with many theories and suspects still under investigation.
- The Columbine High School Massacre: In 1999, two students carried out a mass shooting at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, killing 13 people and injuring many others. The tragedy sparked nationwide discussions about school safety and gun control.
- The Aurora Theater Shooting: In 2012, a man opened fire at a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, during a showing of “The Dark Knight Rises,” killing 12 people and injuring dozens more. The shooter was eventually convicted and sentenced to life in prison.
- The Linda Miracle Murder: In 1979, Linda Miracle was abducted from a shopping mall parking lot in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and murdered. Her killer, Robert Charles Browne, was not caught until decades later, when he confessed to the crime.
- The Timothy Masters Case: In 1999, 15-year-old Timothy Masters was arrested and charged with the murder of Peggy Hettrick in Fort Collins, Colorado. Masters maintained his innocence and was eventually exonerated in 2008 after DNA evidence proved he was not the killer.
These are just a few of the many shocking true crime cases from Colorado. While the Rocky Mountains may be a symbol of adventure and exploration, they have also been the backdrop to some of the most heartbreaking and disturbing crimes in American history.
