Arizona is known for its beautiful landscapes, bustling cities, and unfortunately, some of the most shocking crimes in American history. From serial killers to notorious bank robbers, Arizona has seen it all. Here are five of the most high-profile true crime cases that shook the state.
- The Baseline Killer: In 2005-2006, a serial killer known as the Baseline Killer terrorized Phoenix, killing at least 9 people and committing multiple sexual assaults. The killer was eventually caught and sentenced to death in 2011.
- The Phoenix Canal Murders: In the 1990s, a series of murders occurred along the canals in Phoenix. The victims were all homeless men who were beaten to death and left in the canals. The killer, Dale Hausner, was eventually caught and sentenced to death.
- The Yuma Territorial Prison Break: In 1875, 28 prisoners escaped from the Yuma Territorial Prison in what is now Arizona. The escape was one of the largest in American history and resulted in a nationwide manhunt. Only a few of the prisoners were eventually caught.
- The Tucson Shooting: In 2011, a man named Jared Lee Loughner opened fire at a public event in Tucson, killing six people and injuring 13 others, including U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords. Loughner was sentenced to life in prison without parole.
- The Tison Gang: In 1978, three brothers and a friend escaped from prison and embarked on a killing spree across Arizona. Their crime spree resulted in the deaths of six people, including a family of four. The Tison brothers were eventually caught and sentenced to death.
